Mike Walsh - Mine Manager

Michael Walsh graduated as a mining engineer in 1976. He worked in underground barite and open-cut bentonite mines in Iran before moving to the USA. He spent the next five years in California, first as a partner in a solar heating company, then as a self-employed automotive mechanic before joining a small company in Plumas National Forest, in the Sierra Nevada re-opening a gold mine that had been abandoned for 55 years.
Upon returning to Australia he worked with homeless street-kids, then spent two years of voluntary work on a mission hospital in Burkina Faso, West Africa, looking after construction and maintenance.
He returned to Australia, and rejoined the mining industry, at Telfer, with Newmont Australia Ltd (now Newcrest). He spent 15 years with Newmont/Newcrest in many diverse roles, both open pit and underground, ranging from junior engineer to Project Manager to Operations Manager. Following that he worked for Ivanhoe Mines Mongolia on the Oyu Tolgoi project in the Gobi Desert.
Since then he has worked in surface and underground mines as Mining Manager,  General Manager or Chief Mining Engineer, at Southern Cross, Marvel Loch, Wodgina (tantalum), Daveyhurst and Wiluna, before joining Crescent Gold.
In his spare time he has assisted the Dept of Mines by marking examination papers for mine managers, spent time in China evaluating tailings dams, and spent a couple of months as a volunteer worker, in a refugee camp in Ethiopia.
He is keenly interested in third world development, justice, ethical management, and fairness to mine workers.
